WHEN RICE BECAME A MARKET
In Edo-period Japan, rice was never just food. It was currency, tribute, and fate — bought and sold on promises before the harvest even began. At the Dōjima Rice Exchange in Osaka, merchants gathered to trade paper against grain that didn't yet exist. It was, some say, the world's first futures market. And wherever men trade the future, they begin to read it.

These early records weren't decoration. They were survival. A merchant named Honma Munehisa studied these movements so closely that his rivals called him the God of Markets. Legend says he could sense a price shift six hundred kilometers away, carried by a relay of runners racing faster than rumor itself.
